Respond to: Daniel Marsh, Apprenticeship Director: info@greatworkinc.org,

Description of Position
Great Work apprentices work side-by-side with students and guides in either the farm school (junior high) or the high school at Great Work’s lab school—Compass Montessori School in Golden, Colorado. During their school year (August to May), the apprenticeship cohort also engages in project work, readings, seminars, reflection assignments, and individual research, to support them in understanding and applying the principles of Montessori Scientific Pedagogy in the process of program development. Great Work provides a cohort coordinator and a mentor for each apprentice to offer complementary supports to the school day experiences.

The apprentice’s work will primarily be within either the farm school or high school, however, they will also receive an orientation to, and have chances to observe, many aspects and levels within a primary to twelfth-grade school (ages three- to eighteen-years old). We will work with each apprentice to customize the experience to fit their unique needs and interests. To begin the first semester, apprentices will likely play the role of an assistant to a teacher and student advisor. As the apprentice gains knowledge, skill, and confidence, responsibilities and opportunities will be presented that match the apprentice’s strengths with the needs of the school and students.

Qualifications (Minimum and Preferred)
The Great Work Montessori Secondary Apprenticeship invites both aspiring and experienced secondary educators to immerse themselves for a year in a school culture that models a hopeful vision of adolescence as a time to develop self-awareness, social integration, and commitment to social justice.

The aim of the Montessori Secondary Apprenticeship is to empower practitioners so that they return to their communities and create new educational realities that meet the needs and manifest the gifts of the people and places they serve.

Description of Community
Connect with a group of educators that are truly reconstructing schooling in America. Know the power and beauty of Montessori’s method and its discoveries. No more desks in rows, or bells to rule the day. No more arbitrary rewards and punishments, or work without purpose or meaningful feedback. Help create multi-age communities of joy, humor, and peace, where freedom is met with opportunity and responsibility, and the work spans the gamut of human needs and possibilities.
