About Compass: Compass Montessori works to create a culture of work and wonder that nurtures and empowers the whole child, supporting the development of passionate lifelong learners, who continuously improve themselves and the world around them.

*A culture of work and wonder…
– As one of the only public schools in the country that offers a full Montessori education from Pre-K through 12th grade, the Compass Montessori community fosters a love of learning among our students by applying the theory and practice of one of the world’s greatest educators – Maria Montessori

*That nurtures and empowers the whole child…
– An education at Compass Montessori not only emphasizes academics, but also focuses on community citizenship, physical health, emotional wellness, service learning, the development of grace & courtesy, and peaceful resolution. All of this while providing all children with a comprehensive education that meets state and national academic standards.

*Supporting the development of passionate lifelong learners
– Echoing the mantra of “follow the child,” Compass Montessori guides seek to inspire a passion for learning by encouraging students to explore their world in a prepared environment that is rich with learning materials and opportunities. We offer our youngest learners a solid introduction to the world around them. We teach the “great lessons” of the Montessori curriculum, and support the individual with inquisitive exploration of student-based questions. We help students learn from our world through “going-outs” and overnight trips (including out of state trips in middle school and international travel in high school). We inspire through project-based and hands-on learning.

*Who continuously improve themselves and the world around them
– Throughout a child’s education at Compass, students become members of a community where their service is critical to our sustenance. Our students help prepare and serve meals and snacks. Middle school students participate in “occupations” that support a 150 student “working village.” High School students spend one day a week in “AWOL” – a program to foster internship and community service time in our broader community.

Our mission is to be a school for human flourishing: cultivating minds, hands, and hearts for lives of wonder, work, and love. We offer our students a rich, rigorous, and personalized education through Montessori learning, supported with rich liberal arts content through Core Knowledge, and the best practices of high-performing urban schools. And we are building an attachment village of supports between school, families, and our community. We opened in summer 2015 with 130 students age 3-7. We currently have six Montessori Primary classrooms. In 2016 we seek to expand Primary and open three Lower Elementary classes. We will expand up to age 12 in the coming years.

We are seeking applicants for lead, assistant, and special education teachers, and support positions. Passionate and knowledgeable teachers can dramatically improve the achievement of children subjected to educational inequality. At Libertas, we aim to make teaching about craftsmanship with sustainability. We have a steadfast commitment to the principles of Montessori and liberal arts learning, and at the same time are prudent in practice: “following the child,” matching him or her with the beautiful and rigorous work of their own development. Features of how we support teachers:
–Team teaching (Visit the “our team” page for more about the great team of educators you could join)
–Professional development in Montessori pedagogy through our partnership with the National Center for Montessori in the Public Sector (See below or visit the Montessori Institute & Teacher Residency page of our website to learn more)
–Weekly early-release for PD
–Embedded observation, coaching, and leadership development

Summer Institute and Residency: quality Montessori teacher development
Our students need the strengths offered by teachers from both urban and Montessori backgrounds. Therefore Libertas has partnered with the National Center for Montessori in the Public Sector (NCMPS) to develop a Montessori public school teacher Institute & Residency. In our founding year, the summer Institute ran for 5-6 weeks, and featured PD in Montessori pedagogy, child development, curriculum, and understanding the unique needs of our community. Through this year, residents participate in regular PD, observation, and feedback. We are currently refining and expanding the next phase of the Institute & Residency, along with external training partners, to support Lower Elementary as well as Primary for 2016. In addition, we are working to obtain a Montessori accreditation from MACTE and a public school teacher certification endorsement. The program would be valued at between $6,000 to $10,000, but Libertas sponsors that cost for teachers who commit to three years of service. During the summer, participants may be eligible for a stipend; during the year, residents (sometimes called “interns”) are part- or full-time staff members with salary and benefits.
