Laramie boasts a low cost of living and excellent outdoor recreation possibilities, including downhill and cross country skiing, hiking, fishing, mountain biking, rock climbing, and more.

Laramie Montessori School is a tuition-free charter school serving students from Kindergarten through 6th grade. Our mission is to support the development of the whole child through an authentic Montessori environment that honors the child’s intrinsic motivation to learn and supports each individual’s unique intellectual, physical, social and emotional development. Along with the Montessori curriculum every child also receives instruction in Art, Music and Physical Education.

Laramie Montessori School is Wyoming’s first Montessori charter school and third charter school in the state. In January 2008 a few parents who wanted something different for their children created the non-profit group Laramie Montessori Elementary School Steering Committee to begin the process of bringing elementary Montessori to Laramie, WY. With support from the Albany County Resource and assistance from the Wyoming Department of Education and several Montessori schools in Colorado, this pioneering group of parents took the first steps toward opening Laramie Montessori School.

In September 2008, the Laramie Montessori Community Organization, a non-profit group, was created with the purpose of obtaining funding and approval for a Montessori charter school in Laramie.

In May 2011, all the pieces fell into place with the approval of the charter application by the Albany County School District #1, the award of two grants: Charter School grant and a Daniel’s Fund grant to help with the start-up costs and the arrangement of space within the Lincoln Community Center at 365 W. Description of Position
Ficus Tree School offers a full Montessori ongoing preschool program for two years now, consisting of a Toddler and Primary classroom of approximately 35 students in all. The elementary program has never used the Montessori method but our vision, philosophy and approach has always been influenced by it, in several aspects of the program. Some of the children who are in Elementary now have been somewhat exposed to the method on previous years.

The candidate needs to fully understand the challenges of making a transition from a traditional learning environment to a Montessori one and feel confident with it. The program would start next school year 2015-16 in September with the Lower Elementary and gradually introduce it to the Upper Elementary with a small student group of approximately 15 students to start with. The candidate also needs to have direction skills as he/she will have to consolidate curriculum and communicate with families and other staff members.

Someone who is driven by passion for the Montessori method, by life experiences in different cultures and by nature is the person we are seeking. This is an opportunity for a professional to grow with the school and create a whole new elementary program.

Qualifications (Minimum and Preferred)
Summer Institute and Residency: a quality, sustained Montessori professional development opportunity
We value the knowledge and skills that effective urban teachers bring to our school, and we need all lead teachers to be trained in Montessori. At the same time, we want to help those experienced Montessori teachers interested in Libertas meet the additional requirements for effectively working in a public school. Therefore Libertas is partnering with the National Center for Montessori in the Public Sector (NCMPS) to create a Montessori urban public school teacher Institute & Residency. The Institute is designed with modules to meet the needs of teachers from each of these backgrounds. In this, our founding year, the summer Institute will run from early June through mid July. Throughout the following year, Residents will receive regular observations and feedback with a mentor teacher as well as monthly professional development. The Residency will complete with a capstone session at the end of the school year. Libertas is working with NCMPS to obtain both MACTE-accreditation (i.e. portable Montessori credential) and a state teacher certification endorsement (i.e. Tennessee teacher license) for this Institute & Residency. This Institute and Residency would be valued at between $6,000 to $10,000, but Libertas will sponsor 100% of that cost for teachers who commit to three years of service.

This includes helping current and prospective families understand and embrace that approach, driving implementation of best practices, advocating for research-based improvements to the Montessori method, and supporting Barrie as a sought-after learning site for interns. Barrie is also a member of the American Montessori Society, so familiarity with AMS training, practices, and research is essential given the demands and requirements for full accreditation. The new division head will also support the continuation of a strong before- and after-care program.
In a diverse school community serving students age 18 months through Grade 12 encompassing a number of key constituencies, the division Head must be a team-builder, advocate, and effective oral communicator and writer. As the “face” of Barrie Montessori, he or she should be able to carefully balance building consensus with taking the initiative to lead on a variety of issues relevant to the division, the school, and the Institute

Qualifications (Minimum and Preferred)
PROFESSIONAL AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE NEW HEAD OF BARRIE MONTESSORI
Professionally, the new Head of Barrie Montessori will be someone who:
 Expects and supports excellence: Barrie needs to continue to be at the forefront of outstanding teaching. Barrie’s students and parents speak enthusiastically about the quality of our educational experience throughout the grades, along with our broad curricular opportunities, especially those that relate to hands-on activities. It is important that the overall curriculum across the school be coherent and well-articulated and positioned against national standards and local competition, while acknowledging the range of students’ learning differences. The new Head of Barrie Montessori will both lead and guide continued reflection and improvement of the overall Barrie program and ensure we remain fully accredited, including understanding the requirements of the state Office of Child Care. The position also recruits, supervises and evaluates faculty.
 Works well within a complex entity: Barrie is a multi-faceted institution, combining an independent school with a Montessori credentialing program and a long-established summer day camp. The division Head must be comfortable creating links between the Montessori philosophy in the lower grades with a thematic curriculum in the middle and upper grades, as well as building strong ties to the Institute and Camp.
 Can manage school finances: Like many small schools, Barrie’s finances are primarily tuition driven. The budget must be carefully constructed and thoughtfully monitored, balancing enrollment and staffing.
 Can speak compellingly to current and prospective families: Barrie’s program is not known well enough in the greater Washington, D.C. community and competition from other area schools is intense. The division head will have an active role in crafting marketing messages to promote Barrie Montessori and articulating Barrie’s mission and Montessori philosophy to current and prospective families.
 Builds bridges and stretches boundaries: Given the success of the Barrie Montessori program and the importance of the Institute for Advanced Montessori Studies, the Head of Barrie Montessori needs to understand, appreciate, and advocate for the Montessori philosophy, while embracing the best of a diverse range of other research-based practices.
 Connects our campus to the world at large: As an institution, Barrie believes in building solid and meaningful connections with the world beyond our campus, through partnerships (local, regional, and international). Further, we view our classrooms as encompassing the entirety of our 45-acre campus, indoors and out.
 Appreciates outstanding colleagues: The Head of Barrie Montessori will be committed to supporting outstanding teachers, fellow administrators, and staff. This includes commitment to teacher research and peer observation and coaching.
 Is comfortable in a diverse school: Diversity is a natural and integral part of life at Barrie, and the school values the significant degree of diversity within its student body.
 Has visionary outlook: The division Head should have a history of leading institutional growth. This will include carefully designed trials of new programs, including quick adjustments to make them successful, as well as timely termination of programs that don’t work.
 Is a skilled communicator: The division Head should be both a dynamic speaker and excellent writer.
 Is aware of safety and security issues: Barrie carefully balances an open, welcoming campus atmosphere with a continuing concern for students’ safety and security in a sometimes threatening world. We believe our greatest asset in building a safe environment is our close-knit and supportive community.
 Is comfortable with technology: Barrie is committed to appropriate use of technological tools, properly and thoughtfully integrated into the curriculum. The division Head should also be comfortable using technology to support the administrative requirements of the position.
 Enjoys being part of a team: The Head of Barrie Montessori should welcome collaboration and teamwork.
PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
The Head of Barrie Montessori will be someone who:
 Is accessible: The division Head must be a highly visible part of the daily life of the school, whose personality lends itself to easy, friendly, and engaging interactions. He or she should know all the students and enjoy the opportunity to spend time with them and their families.
 Is focused, organized, and goal oriented: The division Head should be able to prioritize, develop systems and procedures, and establish clear standards of accountability.
 Exhibits sound judgment, seeks input, and makes decisions in a timely fashion: The division Head values collaborative leadership, working with staff and peer administrators.
 Is energetic, self-confident, outgoing, and knowledgeable about current educational best practices.
 Maintains high standards of integrity and a sense of humor.
